emergency contraception (levonorgestrel) is an over-the-counter medication that is sometimes called “the morning after pill.” it has several brand names, like Plan B, AfterPill, Preventeza, and My Way. when taken immediately after intercourse, it can prevent pregnancy by delaying ovulation — if there is no egg to fertilize, pregnancy cannot occur. Emergency contraception is NOT the same as an “abortion pill” and will not harm an existing pregnancy.
